At Gokak Falls the Ghataprabha river plunges about 52 metres over a curved sandstone cliff, which has earned it comparisons with Niagara. In 1887 it became one of the first places in India to generate hydroelectric power. A hanging bridge crosses the gorge beside old Chalukyan temples.
